What Is a French Drain?

A French drain is a trench that catches water below the surface and carries it away from the spots where it causes trouble. The trench is lined with fabric to keep soil out, a perforated pipe sits in a bed of gravel at the bottom, and river rock fills in the top.

Water soaks down through the rock and gravel, flows into the pipe through its small holes, and the pipe carries it off to a safe spot away from your home and yard.

Signs you might need one

  • Puddles or soggy spots that stay for days after it rains
  • Water collecting near your foundation or getting into the basement
  • Mulch, soil or stone washing out of your beds
  • Water running toward your patio, walkway or driveway
  • A low part of the yard that never seems to dry out

Underground Downspouts

We pipe your downspouts underground and carry roof water away from the house, so it stops pooling at the foundation and washing out your beds.

Drainage Questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Call (585) 530-7974 or send us a message.

How do I know if I have a drainage problem?

Puddles that stay for days after it rains, water collecting near your foundation, mulch or soil washing out of your beds, or a low spot that never dries out are all signs. If any of that sounds familiar, give us a call.

What is the difference between a French drain and underground downspouts?

A French drain collects water from the ground and carries it away through a buried pipe. Underground downspouts take the water coming off your roof and carry it away from the house. Many yards need one, the other or both, depending on where the water comes from.

Can you fix water pooling near my foundation?

Often, yes. Roof water coming out of the downspouts is a common cause, and piping it underground carries it away from the house. We look at where the water is really coming from first, so we fix the cause and not just the symptom.

Where does the water go?

Away from your house to a safe spot on your property. Where that is depends on your yard and how it slopes, so we figure it out when we come out to look.

Jobs big or small, we do it all.
